Customer story: John Bates Associates
John Bates Associates, an Architectural practice based in Laguna Hills, California, has been in business now for over 25 years. They have proved themselves on a wide range of projects ranging from residential design for large U.S. developers, to municipal projects including designs for numerous Civic Center, senior centers, gymnasiums, and community centers. They use Piranesi throughout the design process. Tony Torres, who initiated the use of this program, takes up the story.
Hand drawn rendering
The advantage that a hand drawn rendering has over a computer rendering is that a project can be visualized without having to explore too much detail. A realistic computer rendering, having such a cleaned, polished look, demands more attention to detailing that, in preliminary design, has not been worked out yet.
Our clients seem to be more comfortable viewing "sketched" style renderings; the renderings don't look so complete as to imply a completed design. The sketchy quality is a little more inviting than a polished rendering and allows the client to use his or her imagination in shaping the building, thus inviting them into the design.
In the above rendering of a council chamber, the 'sketched' style will encourage feedback from the client on the important design concepts. A more 'finished' image would tend to inhibit feedback, or focus attention on irrelevant details.
The images for the Black Gold Golf Course Clubhouse were developed for marketing purposes for the grand opening of the facility and for publication, but it proved to be useful in more ways than one.
We used the rendering as a way of providing a design alternative to the columns and tower element of the entry. The left hand image above was the original design, and after seeing how well the stonework added to the overall aesthetic of the building, we decided to make a suggestion to the the client, the city, to continue the stonework in the areas mentioned. This was done as the building was under construction, so we needed a accurate, yet quick, way of showing our intentions. The city approved the design addition and the design scheme was carried through as can be seen in the photograph of the finished clubhouse (below).
Piranesi has become a great tool during the design process, as well as its ability to give a final rendering.
